In 2020 Sophie was given a large amount of medieval larch planks from a building restoration near the Teatro Salvini in Pieve di Teco. From these she created this monumental sculpture of Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion. It shows a figurative theme designed around large abstract curves, balancing impossibly, and designed with the lightness of bronze casting in mind. It is a classical theme that is popular with artists historically, as it allows the depiction of a nude male wrestling his apparent demons. Sophie finished the sculpture using donated local beeswax, to fill in the gaps and to seal the wood. There is still a latent smell of larch pine and beeswax, if you stand close enough. The sculpture was due to be exhibited at Masterpiece Art Fair in London, but like everything else, the exhibition was cancelled when Covid struck. Three years later, Hercules has been moved to the entrance of the Commune in Pieve di Teco, a monument to the resilience of art and the wonderful bounty and spirit that makes Pieve di Teco, the Arroscia and Arrogna valleys, such a marvelous, cultural and internationally diverse place to live.
