Sophie Dickens is a contemporary British sculptor. Her exuberant, instantly recognizable modern sculptures have graced cathedrals and enlivened skylines from London to Los Angeles. Brought together by energy and wit, her body of work is expansive and restless, covering a wide range of abstract and figurative subjects, classical and de-pedestalised, herd and pack installations, athletes, gods and lovers.

NATURE AND THE ELEMENTS, 2008-2024
ONE STONE LIGHOGRAPH & TWO PENCIL AND INK WASH.
These three images are connected with the struggle between man and nature. Hercules battles the Nemean Lion, a circular action where the winner is not quite yet identified. A man, the personification of water or the sea, rocks a boat like a toy, an idea for a sculpture concerned with the elements. Another element – earth, is represented by a man struggling under the weight of a phallic tower.
WOLVES, 2017
PENCIL AND BLACK INK WASH
Having made studies of wolves, and gained some understanding of their structure, these drawings explore what makes a wolf shape using simple lines and ink wash for volume. The resulting sculptures were photographed in Pieve di Teco and Oneglia, and exhibited in Turin in the Galleria Umberto in 2018 in conjunction with Artissima.

SCARAB, 2023
BLACK CHALK, ACRYLIC, WATER COLOR
Three small paintings inspired by the scarab beetle, who collects dung and rolls it into a ball that it pushes to a safe storage place. Here, the beetle has been replaced by a man, labouring under the effort of pushing a large ball of dung. The metaphors and analogies are quite obvious I think.
